The Organizational Analysis System

The Organizational Analysis System (OAS) is designed to provide decision makers with a reliable, quantifiable assessment of a work group's potential for successfully making a transition to a new way of working. Whatever the vision of the end state of an organizational change process is, we have to know:

  1. How well is the direction of the workgroup articulated, and communicated to the talent in the group?
  2. How much human capital exists and how is it developed?
  3. How well does the group deliver on its value proposition to its customers?
  4. How close are its information systems to "state of the practice?"
  5. How well does its planning and improvement process operate?
  6. What is the availability, and potential to provide, appropriate physical facilities to support emerging forms of work process.

Administration of the OAS requires about two hours of a workgroup leader's time to participate in a structured interview with one of the project staff. An additional hour of telephone conversation may be required to obtain some data not immediately available to the group leader. Our research shows that workgroups who score more than one standard deviation below national norms on three or more of the five core factors, in 95% of cases fail to make a successful transition to a new work state.

The Workforce Survey

The Future of Work Workforce Survey is an online survey instrument that captures data about the habits, likes, dislikes, and needs of distributed workers. The 2003 Workforce Survey includes 28 items in the following major categories:

  • the type of work people do
  • where people work, and for how many hours each week
  • the characteristics of a workplace that people consider desirable
  • the mix of work activities in a typical day (meetings, private work, etc.)
  • the importance of various technologies and support services
  • the social context in which work takes place
  • perspectives on personal productivity and the factors that enhance or detract from productivity
  • degree of satisfaction with the social, technical, and physical contexts in which people work
  • personal demographics

The overall purpose of survey is to gain an understanding of how the workplace is evolving and how individual patterns of work are changing.

We currently have data and normative patterns on over 600 individual workers in a wide variety of job situations in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

The ROI Calculator

The ROI Calculator is an economic analysis and decision support tool that enables an organization to compile data on the full costs of supporting knowledge workers, to build alternative scenarios of different workplaces and work arrangements, and to conduct return-on-investment analysis of the value of moving from the current baseline to one scenario or another.

The ROI Calculator is a spreadsheet-based analytic tool that allows users to enter both current financial data and estimated future costs in a comprehensive chart of accounts structure. The tool then produces a pro forma income and expense statement for each completed scenario, as well as analysis of the economic changes over time as new work arrangements are introduced. The cost categories include:

  • Labor/HR costs of the workforce
  • Facilities and Facilities Support Costs (including furniture and equipment)
  • Technology and IT Support Costs
  • HR Support Costs
  • Administrative Support Costs
  • Management Costs

The ROI Calculator enables you to test alternate workforce profiles, varying space configurations, and a variety of cost options, and to compare the consolidated economic consequences of those options.

The ROI Calculator is in the final stages of initial development. The tools is currently being tested and validated by the Future of Work members.

For further information, or to discuss applying the ROI Calculator within your own organization, please contact Jim Ware.
